Tips on being Consistent on Daily Sketching
5 Tips to Sketch Everyday
Why Should you Sketch Daily?
Sketching everyday will give the benefits of improving as an artist. This includes exercising your creativity, mood, and self confidence.
Anyone can agree that these 3 attributes are positive for reaching your best self.
Daily sketching is a critical part of every artist, no matter if it's a beginner or a professional.
This is why I've listed 5 helpful tips to make it easier to understand where and how to start your daily routine.
1. Place Your Sketchbook Where you can See It
Placing your sketchbook and art matierals where you can see it, will be the first srep into obtaining your goal.
Even though this is an easy step, it'll be a crucial step not to skip. Every person in some way is a visual person. You see something, you immediately think about it and process it.
So having your art tools ready on your desk or somewhere you frequently visit, will be the most helpful step to start a daily sketching routine.
2. Be Discplined not Motivated
Feeling motivated is a good way to make you draw, but it won't last long.
Motivation is a feeling which will fade away at some point and you can't gurantee you'll feel this way everyday.
On the the other hand, discipline is an action not a feeling.
What does this mean?
Well, this means that even when you don't feel motivated, you'll get the task done.
Disciple, is what gets you to do things that you don't always want to do. If you do something routinely, then you'll have the disciple to acheive it.
Also. remember to not be so hard on yourself if you skip around and forget to sketch that day.
Especially for those procastinators, discipline will make you take charge far more than motivation.
3. Surround Yourself with Art
Surrounding yourself with art will definitely make you creative. First you'll need to identify the areas or objects you see and use everyday. For ecample, your desk, your phone, or places in your home.
Next, you'll need to find a way to make it suit your artistic style and interests. Such as, following and subscribing to artists online, that you find inspiration from and enjoy watching.
As well as, hanging up an art peice you created on your room or other areas in your home.
Then, these small actions will remind you to draw and to be discipled to act.
4. Don't be harsh with your imperfections
I know that sometimes a sketch can look hideous.
However, it's a sketch.
A sketch doesn’t always need to be accurate and detailed. Most importantly, is the practice it gives you while drawing.
So, if you sketch something that doesn't look amazing or as realistic. Just know that sketching daily is a process of ups and downs.
Keeping this in mind, don't shy away of trying and failing multiple times in order to improve.
5. Draw Somethng Small and Simple
Sketching something as simple as a sphere or an eye is equally as beneficial as drawing something advanced. Challenge yourself by not using a reference, but sketch something that you see around yourself or in your mind.
Don't stress about drawing something complicated, instead focus on the shapes of something, capturing the shades of what makes it come to life.
SOME SIMPLE THINGS TO DRAW;
- Anything you see at your job/school
- Objects with deep contrasts in shadow and light
- people you see (don't be creepy though)
- Lines or shapes
- Patterns
Sketch simple things when you can't find a reference.
6. Sketch Multiple Times a Day
Don't have 1-2 hours to draw?
Then, try to draw several times a day. This can be anytime you have free. Whether that's during your lunch break, morning time, evening time, or perhaps before going to bed.
Also, dividing your time into 15-30 minutes each time you draw.
This is a technique I use everyday, I try to draw as much as I possibly can when I have time to kill.
Overtime you'll get into a mental routine and it'll become a muscle.
